SUMMARY:The Concord Players are pleased to present “Songs for a New World”
DESCRIPTION:As part of Concord’s 250th celebration The Concord Players are pleased to present “Songs for a New World”         June 20 – 22\, 2025\n\n\nThe Performing Arts Center\, 51 Walden Street\, Concord\, MA \nSongs for a New World uses the music of Jason Robert Brown to depict the most intense moment any person can go through: a moment of tremendous change.  The show is somewhere between musical and song cycle – a series of songs all connected by a theme: ‘the moment of decision’. \nWith a rousing score that blends elements of pop\, gospel and jazz\, featuring tight harmonies and darling vocals\, Songs for a New World transports its audience from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship bound for a new land\, to the ledge of a New York penthouse. Characters range from the mother of a Revolutionary soldier awaiting the end of the brutal war\, to a young man in the Bronx dreaming of becoming a famous basketball player\, to a forlorn and neglected Mrs. Claus lamenting as Christmas approaches. \nA small\, but powerful\, diverse cast and a supercharged\, well-crafted score appeal to old and new generations alike as each character — in their own way — takes hold of that one moment and enters a new world. \nAccording to the composer\, Songs for a New World is “about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice\, or take a stand\, or turn around and go back.” \nPerformances: \nFriday\, June 20 at 7:30 pm/Saturday\, June 21 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm/Sunday\, June 22 at 2:00 pm \nTickets: $20.00 with reserved seating \nFor tickets and more information: concordplayers.org or call 978-369-2990

SUMMARY:Harvesting the Spirit of Transcendentalism in Education Today
DESCRIPTION:  \nWednesday\, April 2\, 2025\, 6-7:45pm: Harvesting the Spirit of Transcendentalism in Education Today. \n  \nThough I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been\, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there\, and I am prepared to expect wonders.\n— Henry David Thoreau \n  \nTranscendentalism broke upon the American scene in the 1830s and 40s\, led primarily by women and men in Concord\, Boston and beyond: Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Margaret Fuller\, Henry David Thoreau\, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody\, Bronson Alcott\, and others. Transcendentalism was a literary\, philosophical\, spiritual\, and reform-minded movement that challenged the materialism of the day and contributed to a range of radical reforms in religion\, education\, literature\, science\, and politics.  \n  \nAlthough they didn’t always agree with each other\, the Transcendentalists shared a passion for learning.  Their minds were curious\, rigorous\, far-reaching.  They wanted to grow spiritually and explore more deeply the world around them. There was a sense of shared excitement\, a drive to learn and grow. They wanted that for others as well and had some ideas about how to reshape education towards that end. \n  \nOur panel of modern-day educators will reflect on their own teaching experiences within the broader context of Transcendentalism and this desire to reshape education.  \n\nCan we find in our own schools some of the seeds they planted so long ago? \nAre Transcendentalist ideas on education still alive and well and growing today? \nWhere can we locate their educational philosophies — innovation\, active learning\, experiential education\, learning outdoors in nature\, student-centered learning\, new forms of adult education\, learning by doing — in the best practices of teachers today?\n\n  \nThese and other questions will be examined by our panelists:\n* Rev. Jenny Rankin\,\n* early childhood educator Betsy Siebert\,\n* Fenn teacher Elise Mott\, and\n* Concord-Carlisle High School/Rivers and Revolutions teacher Tracie Dunn. \n  \nThis event will take place in the Goodwin Forum at the Concord Free Public Library and is co-sponsored by Concord Children’s Center and the Transcendentalism Council. The evening is free of charge\, open to the public. In addition to honoring Concord Children’s Center’s 50th anniversary\, this event is part of the Concord250 Celebrations.

SUMMARY:Concord Art: 250 Paintings for Concord’s 250th!
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the town of Concord’s 250th anniversary\, we invite you to join us for an art-making extravaganza! This June\, artists can register and pick up a free wood panel (8 x 8 inches) from Concord Art to create an image of Concord\, whatever that may mean to you. Perhaps there is a certain road or field or woods or something else that you’ve always been drawn to or inspired by. All media is welcome; the only constraint is that you use your wood panel as your surface! You can enjoy camaraderie and community in the outdoors and create alongside your fellow artists by working either outside Concord Art (along the American Mile) or at one of our designated locations during the week of June 2nd through June 6th (locations to be announced). Artists are welcome to work together each day at these locations from 10am to 4pm. Don’t forget your easel\, supplies\, water\, and snacks! For planning purposes\, please register in advance. Space is limited at each location. Our goal is to collect 250 paintings for Concord’s 250th! At the end of the week\, we will create a digital gallery exhibition\, so please share your finished artwork with us by completing this form (the form is not available yet) by Monday June 16th. \nImage attached: Jean Smith\, The Old Manse

SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Concord Orchestra performance “American Heritage”
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. SUMMARY:Urinetown the Musical May 2-17
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Players presents Urinetown the Musical…a slightly different type of Revolution! \nIt’s a dark time in a dark city\, where a 20-year drought has led to severe water restrictions — including a ban on private toilets. Fee-based public toilets are controlled by the evil Urine Good Company\, which is gleefully gouging huge profits off a very basic human need. In all this wasteland\, can a golden-throated hero arise who has the heart\, the hope\, and the pipes to lead the people to freedom? \nWinner of multiple Tony awards\, Urinetown the Musical is an irreverent satire\, whose sharp wit and non-stop humor present us with the endlessly comic side of unchecked capitalism\, corporate mismanagement\, and social irresponsibility. \nPerformances: May 2\, 3\, 9\, 10\, 16 & 17 at 8:00 pm and May 4 & 11 at 2:00pm \nat The Performing Arts Center\, 51 Walden Street\, Concord\, MA \nFor Tickets and more information: concordplayers.org or call 978-369-2990

SUMMARY:Concord Players present “Urinetown”
DESCRIPTION:A slightly different kind of revolution will take place in historic Concord with The Concord Players’ production of Urinetown the Musical! It’s a dark time in a dark city\, where a 20-year drought has led to severe water restrictions – including a ban on private toilets. Public pay toilets are controlled by the evil ‘Urine Good Company’\, which is gleefully gouging huge profits off a very basic human right: the privilege to pee. Despite the title\, this multiple Tony Award winner is an irreverent satire\, whose sharp wit and non-stop humor presents the endlessly comic side of unchecked capitalism\, corporate greed and social irresponsibility. Urinetown takes a modern approach to examine the concept of a revolution with this road to freedom paved with catchy music\, flashy dance sequences and witty comedy. Performances: May 2\, 3\, 9\, 10\, 16 & 17 at 8:00 pm and May 4 & 11 at 2:00 pm Tickets: $28. with reserved seating Visit: www.concordplayers.org
