SUMMARY:One-Day Choir with Kenter Davies at the Armory
DESCRIPTION:Join friends and neighbors in this one of a kind collective choral event! Led and arranged by beloved NYC music leader Kenter Davies (who grew up in Sudbury!)\, we’ll explore harmony\, free our voices\, and build community through the song “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. There’s no auditions\, no experience necessary\, and no seeking of perfection\, We’ll just be making music for music-making’s sake! \nA timeless classic about the beauty of the natural world and the kindness we can afford one another as humans\, “What a Wonderful World” feels more important than ever to sing. We’ll explore a choral arrangement of the tune featuring lush\, jazzy harmonies. \nDuring our time together we will: \n○ Play singing games to activate our voices\, bodies\, and connection to one another \n○ Work through the song section by section\, infusing some musicality as we go \n○ Discuss the lyrics of the song and what meaning we can find in it \n○ Sing through the song a bunch and explore the different journeys it may take us on! \nA week prior to the event\, you’ll receive the sheet music and vocal demos arrangement of the song to use as a resource. You don’t have to be able to read sheet music\, you can absolutely learn by ear! We encourage folks to arrive familiar with the arrangement\, but there’s no pressure to learn everything in advance. We’ll fill in the gaps for one another as we explore and play along the way! \nWright Tavern Sing is a program sponsored by the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust. We bring communal music events to Concord that are accessible\, joyful\, and bring a sense of belonging and connection to the greater village. For more information\, go to www.wrighttavern.org/sing. \nKenter Davies is a vocal arranger\, music educator\, and choral facilitator based in Brooklyn\, New York. He dedicates his work to creating spaces where people can engage with music free from the pressure of perfection\, but full of complexity and joy. He highlights the journey over the destination and firmly believes in making music for music-making’s sake. \nKenter facilitates One Day Choirs and other music events with the NYC-based creative community\, Gaia Music Collective. He has led One-Day Choirs all across the country\, celebrating the magic that diversity brings to group song. \nGET YOUR TICKETS $10-$25

SUMMARY:“Weaving an Address” – Opening Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2025 – Fall 2025 \n“Weaving an Address” \nThe exhibition is planned for The Brister Hill Loop\, part of the forest named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought property in Walden Woods and lived there along with other formerly enslaved. This area holds the untold stories of people who etched out their lives in an area inhospitable to growth. The exhibit intends to be a historically informed temporary outdoor installation in this area to remember those whose lives remain unmarked to express the importance and fullness of history that exists within the background of this historical site. \n  \nThis project is part of The Umbrella Arts Center’s long standing Art Ramble tradition\, but is extended this year because of the 250 celebration. Viewers will walk a trail that has one monument to Brister Freeman and is otherwise named Thoreau’s trail where quotes accompany you throughout. Between 10 and 12 works will be dispersed and placed along a marked path leading to the Reflection Circle. \n  \nThe participating artists will pull their inspiration from the research and information provided about Walden Woods with the primary source of research being the book Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts by Elise Lemire. \n  \nThe site-specific exhibition will be a combination of sculpture\, installation and live performance inspired by the inhabitants of these woods to evoke their presence and to express the experiences of their lives within the space. Many of the artists will also have work in a show that will be being held concurrently in the Allie Kussin Gallery at The Umbrella Arts Center.

DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. SUMMARY:Louisa May Alcott and the Journey to Universal Enfranchisement
DESCRIPTION:  \nMeet at the Concord Town House to celebrate an auspicious moment in our history:  March 29th marks 145 years to the day that Louisa May Alcott\, famed authoress of Little Women and hundreds of other literary works\, became the first woman of Concord to cast a vote in a Town election! \nJoin in the excitement within the very room in the Town House where voting took place\, support the brave band of 19 other women who also voted for School Committee on that triumphant day\, and revel in the newfound empowerment these women achieved by actively participating in democracy as never before! \n  \nLeading the march to the ballot box will be Jan Turnquist – Executive Director of Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House\, world-renowned Living History portrayer of Miss Alcott\, and a Concord resident – who will also speak to and lead a discussion of the meaning of enfranchisement for Concord residents then and now.  Also participating in the voting re-enactment will be Concord’s own Joe Palumbo\, portraying Judge Hoar — and hopefully you\, too! \n  \nThis event\, which is dedicated to the ideals of liberty\, personal agency\, and universal suffrage\, is free and open to all.  Light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:Music From Warm Places
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Band presents Music From Warm Places on Saturday\, March 8\, 2025\, 7:00 PM at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord MA. Under the baton of Music Director James O’Dell\, the program includes captivating works by Lewis Buckley\, Nubia Jaime-Donjuan\, Shelly Hanson\, Terry White and Óscar Navarro. \nA highlight of the program is the Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Band by Spanish composer Óscar Navarro\, masterfully performed by Acton resident Jerry Vabulas\, an outstanding soloist and member of the Concord Band since 2012. Navarro’s composition displays the full range and virtuosity of the clarinet\, along with extended delicate pianissimos and an irresistible touch of jazz. \nJaime-Donjuan’s four-movement Little Mexican Suite is based on traditional Mexican musical genres. Each movement is inspired by a species of tree native to Mexico that has touched the composer’s life. Volver A La Montaña (Return to the Mountain)\, by Shelly Hanson\, is based on the folk music of the Quechua people of Ecuador\, Peru and Bolivia. Terry White’s Fantasia Latina\, a composition commissioned by percussionist Neil Tischler that premiered in March 2020\, is based on four Latin dance styles—tango\, danzon\, songo and samba—and is full of unexpected rhythmic and harmonic twists. Con Sabor Español (With a Spanish Flavor)\, composed by the MetWinds’ former director\, Lew Buckley\, also features numerous rhythmic and time changes. \nThe evening also features a special guest performance by the distinguished Area 9 Saxophone Quartet playing Saxophone Quartet by Venezuelan composer and pianist Aldemaro Romero. SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Where We Belong\, New England Premiere!
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Theater-Maker’s Journey Grapples with Geographic Borders and\nCultural Legacies in a Universal Search for Belonging \nFebruary 28- March 23\, 2025 \nUmbrella Arts\, Black Box Theater \nBy Madeline Sayet\, Directed by Tara Moses \nThe Umbrella Stage Company is thrilled to mount the New England Premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong.\nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, it is helmed by fellow\nIndigenous director and playwright Tara Moses and stars GiGi Buddie. This brand new staging in\nConcord\, MA during the Semiquincentennial of the beginning of the American Revolution raises\ntimely questions of whose histories are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nWith great humor\, insight\, and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves\ntogether Indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, cultural legacy\, the power of language\, and legend. It\nrecounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare in the shadow of the\nBrexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in\ncolonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home as a Mohegan\,\nbut discovers comfort in mirroring the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the\n1700s. \n“Madeline’s story is uniquely personal\, but universally relatable. Following the completion of\nthe original tour with Madeline at the center\,” says Brian Boruta\, Umbrella Stage Producing\nArtistic Director\, “we wanted to explore how the play could evolve\, be adapted for other\nperformers\, and reveal a continuing relevance for future productions and new audiences. Sayet\noriginally developed the play in partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in\nassociation with The Folger Shakespeare Library\, and is engaged with the Umbrella team on this\nnext evolution. \nThe show runs Feb. 28-Mar. 23 (press opening Sunday Mar. 2\, 3:00PM)\, including a special\nStudent Group Matinee Wed. Mar. 12 at 4PM\, and select performances will feature engagement\nopportunities.\n● Dinner & A Show packages are available for all Thursday night performances\n● Talk Backs scheduled following performances on March 12\, 16 and 20\n● Childcare with art activities for youth ages 5-12 is available through The Umbrella’s Kid\nCare program for parents interested in attending the March 16 matinee\nPlanned community engagement activities will also highlight art and experiences of Concord’s\nnative Nipmuc and Massachusett tribes\, including a concurrent gallery exhibition of work by\nNipmuc photographer Scott Strong Hawk Foster.\nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT\nCard-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts\ngalleries. See https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/WWB for more information. \nSpecial Note to Press: We ask our friends in the press to please respect the request to avoid\nreproducing Mohegan language words in their coverage\, including those in the script\, as this is a\nlanguage under active reconstruction and reclamation. \n  \nABOUT MADELINE SAYET\nMadeline Sayet is a member of the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut\, where she was raised on a\ncombination of traditional Mohegan stories and Shakespeare. Both of which have influenced\nher work as a playwright and director.\nShe has been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment\, a NCAIED Native\nAmerican 40 Under 40\, a TED Fellow\, MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow\, and a recipient of the\nWhite House Champion of Change Award from President Obama.
