SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. Free from March 22-June 30\, 2005.\n\nThis walking tour  is  co-sponsored by Minuteman National Park\, The Robbins House\,  and The Concord Visitors Center as a Concord250 Event and is funded by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.\n\nDonations in support of Black History Month in Concord may be made to The Robbins House here:  https://robbinshouse.org/donate/\n\nLearn More about Patriots of Color HERE\n\nhttps://robbinshouse.org/wp-content/uploads/PatriotsofColor-web.pdf\n\nhttps://www.nps.gov/mima/patriotsofcolor.htm

SUMMARY:The Concord Players presents Songs For A New World
DESCRIPTION:As part of Concord’s 250th celebration The Concord Players are pleased to present “Songs for a New World”         June 20 – 22\, 2025\n\n\nThe Performing Arts Center\, 51 Walden Street\, Concord\, MA \nSongs for a New World uses the music of Jason Robert Brown to depict the most intense moment any person can go through: a moment of tremendous change.  The show is somewhere between musical and song cycle – a series of songs all connected by a theme: ‘the moment of decision’. \nWith a rousing score that blends elements of pop\, gospel and jazz\, featuring tight harmonies and darling vocals\, Songs for a New World transports its audience from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship bound for a new land\, to the ledge of a New York penthouse. Characters range from the mother of a Revolutionary soldier awaiting the end of the brutal war\, to a young man in the Bronx dreaming of becoming a famous basketball player\, to a forlorn and neglected Mrs. Claus lamenting as Christmas approaches. \nA small\, but powerful\, diverse cast and a supercharged\, well-crafted score appeal to old and new generations alike as each character — in their own way — takes hold of that one moment and enters a new world. \nAccording to the composer\, Songs for a New World is “about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice\, or take a stand\, or turn around and go back.” \nPerformances: \nFriday\, June 20 at 7:30 pm/Saturday\, June 21 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm/Sunday\, June 22 at 2:00 pm \nTickets: $20.00 with reserved seating \nFor tickets and more information: concordplayers.org or call 978-369-2990

SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Concord Orchestra performance “American Heritage”
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free.

SUMMARY:Minute Man National Historical Park Memorial Weekend Event
DESCRIPTION:Minute Men to Minute Men\nNorth Bridge Visitor Center\nSaturday\, May 24\n10am – 4:30pm\nAs we launch into the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, Minute Man National Historical Park is working on programs that not only tell the story of the revolution but how it impacted the development of the United States. \nIn the spring of 1861\, President Abraham Lincoln put out a call for volunteers to suppress the secessionist rebellion brewing in the south. As a result\, thousands of men from local communities like Concord\, Acton\, and Lowell answered the call as “Minute Men.” \nShockingly on April 19\, 1861\, the 6th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Militia (Minute Men) came under attack by a secessionist mob while transferring trains in Baltimore\, Maryland. In a brutal melee the secessionist killed five militiamen and wounded 36 others. Overall\, the battle resulted in the death of twelve Baltimoreans. These casualties are often cited as the first combat casualties of the American Civil War. For many of the Massachusetts soldiers\, the symbology of their first combat experience occurring on the same day their grandfathers started the revelation was poignant. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 am~ Artifacts of the Pratt Street Riot and Living History at North Bridge Visitor Center *Ongoing throughout the day.\n10:00 am~ Uniforms and equipment of the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia\n11:00 am~ The Radicalization of Massachusetts 1859-1861\n1:00 pm~ The Pratt Street Riot: Battlefield in a Box\n2:00 pm~ Minute Men of 1775 to Minute Men of 1861 *Musket Firing Demonstration*\n3:00 pm~ From Annapolis to Bull Run: The Massachusetts Volunteer Militia\n4:30 pm~ Event Ends

SUMMARY:The Concord Players’ present Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:A slightly different kind of revolution will take place in historic Concord with The Concord Players’ production of Urinetown the Musical! It’s a dark time in a dark city\, where a 20-year drought has led to severe water restrictions – including a ban on private toilets. Public pay toilets are controlled by the evil ‘Urine Good Company’\, which is gleefully gouging huge profits off a very basic human right: the privilege to pee. Despite the title\, this multiple Tony Award winner is an irreverent satire\, whose sharp wit and non-stop humor presents the endlessly comic side of unchecked capitalism\, corporate greed and social irresponsibility. Urinetown takes a modern approach to examine the concept of a revolution with this road to freedom paved with catchy music\, flashy dance sequences and witty comedy. Performances: May 2\, 3\, 9\, 10\, 16 & 17 at 8:00 pm and May 4 & 11 at 2:00 pm Tickets: $28. with reserved seating \nVisit: www.concordplayers.org

SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Concord Chorus Concert “Ernest Bloch: Sacred Service”\, subtitled: “Together in the Light”
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Chorus Spring Concert will take place at St.Camillus Parish Church\, 1185 Concord Turnpike\, Arlington (formerly Menotomy in Revolutionary America) right along the path of British soldiers in their march to Lexington and Concord in April of 1775.\n\nContinuing our emphasis on British and American composers still heard ’round the world\, the concert will feature the music of two modern American composers\, who happen to be teacher and student. The student was Randall Thompson\, whose essential Alleluia\, Ye Shall Have a Song\, and The Last Words of David will serve as a prelude to a major work by one of his teachers\, the Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch. Bloch’s beautiful\, expansive\, and moving Sacred Service is an artistically revolutionary setting of the Jewish liturgy for the Sabbath. These two composers’ works illustrate the progression from the British traditions and styles the Chorus sang in its Winter Concerts\, as well as the inclusion of all faiths and philosophies seeking peace\, unity\, and joy. In this music\, audiences will experience two American composers who are groundbreakers and standard-setters in the development of contemporary choral music: music that will still be heard ’round the world for many years to come.

SUMMARY:Concord250: Discord on the Concord: River Ice Breakup and the Revolution of the Seasons (Then and Now)
DESCRIPTION:The Sudbury-Assabet-Concord (SuAsCo) Wild and Scenic River Stewardship Council hosts University of Connecticut Professor Robert Thorson and a special presentation on the history of our rivers as part of Concord250. \nA frequent and engaging speaker in Concord\, Dr. Thorson is a Midwestern native\, turned Northwestern geologist\, turned Northeastern academic. He is a life member of the Thoreau Society\, serves on its board\, and is the author of The Guide to Walden Pond (2018)\, The Boatman (2017)\, Walden’s Shore (2014)\, Beyond Walden (2009)\, The Walden Experiments (in review at Princeton Press)\, and other works. Since 1984 he has been a Professor of Earth Sciences UConn where he commutes to work on a woodland path. \n  \nHis talk\, “Discord on the Concord: River Ice Breakup and the Revolution of the Seasons (Then and Now)” will feature his new analysis of historic seasonal changes in the rivers\, from spring ice breakup to their typical slow and dark path through our town in summer. Zooming out from the Old North Bridge\, Dr. Thorson will explain this river system’s unusual behavior\, how ice-jam flooding may have played a key role in bridge history between 1660 and 1793\, and how climate change in our 21st century is transforming the river we have known.

SUMMARY:Concord250: Umbrella Arts “Black Out Walden”
DESCRIPTION:Spring through Fall 2025 \n\nThe exhibition is planned for The Brister Hill Loop\, part of the forest named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought property in Walden Woods and lived there along with other formerly enslaved. This area holds the untold stories of people who etched out their lives in an area inhospitable to growth. The exhibit intends to be a historically informed temporary outdoor installation in this area to remember those whose lives remain unmarked to express the importance and fullness of history that exists within the background of this historical site. \n\nThis project is part of The Umbrella Arts Center’s long standing Art Ramble tradition\, but is extended this year because of the 250 celebration. Viewers will walk a trail that has one monument to Brister Freeman and is otherwise named Thoreau’s trail where quotes accompany you throughout. Between 10 and 12 works will be dispersed and placed along a marked path leading to the Reflection Circle. \n\nThe participating artists will pull their inspiration from the research and information provided about Walden Woods with the primary source of research being the book Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts by Elise Lemire. \n\nThe site-specific exhibition will be a combination of sculpture\, installation and live performance inspired by the inhabitants of these woods to evoke their presence and to express the experiences of their lives within the space. Many of the artists will also have work in a show that will be being held concurrently in the Allie Kussin Gallery at The Umbrella Arts Center.
