SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. Billerica Colonial Minutemen will drill with muskets\, cook over an open firepit\, and demonstrate colonial crafts. \n· Family drop-in activities (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) inspired by the American Revolution and the new Barefoot Books publication Rise Up! \n· A Forum with Doris Kearns Goodwin (6:00 – 7:00 pm) on the American Revolution and its legacy. Advanced registration is sold out. Limited attendance available via a stand-by line and livestreamed. DESCRIPTION:The Biggest Little Place is a one act musical written by C.W. Arle and Tyler Arle in celebration of Concord’s 250th birthday. This is an entertaining\, educational and really fun love letter to Concord. The show begins with three middle schoolers walking through Sleepy Hollow Cemetery researching a project for school. They are bemoaning their boring little town and how little there is to do when suddenly the spirits awaken. Emerson\, Hawthorne\, Thoreau and Bronson Alcott take the kids on a historical journey through time from the birth of Concord to today. They meet many others who contributed so much to the “biggest little town in America”  along the way and realize how lucky they are to live here.\n\nThere will be one performance of Biggest Little Place on April 18th at 7:00 pm at Concord Youth Theatre located at 53 Church Street\, West Concord\n\nYou can purchase tickets on our website at concordyouththeatre.org

We’ll explore a choral arrangement of the tune featuring lush\, jazzy harmonies. \nDuring our time together we will: \n○ Play singing games to activate our voices\, bodies\, and connection to one another \n○ Work through the song section by section\, infusing some musicality as we go \n○ Discuss the lyrics of the song and what meaning we can find in it \n○ Sing through the song a bunch and explore the different journeys it may take us on! \nA week prior to the event\, you’ll receive the sheet music and vocal demos arrangement of the song to use as a resource. You don’t have to be able to read sheet music\, you can absolutely learn by ear! We encourage folks to arrive familiar with the arrangement\, but there’s no pressure to learn everything in advance. SUMMARY:“Weaving an Address” – Opening Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2025 – Fall 2025 \n“Weaving an Address” \nThe exhibition is planned for The Brister Hill Loop\, part of the forest named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought property in Walden Woods and lived there along with other formerly enslaved. This area holds the untold stories of people who etched out their lives in an area inhospitable to growth. The exhibit intends to be a historically informed temporary outdoor installation in this area to remember those whose lives remain unmarked to express the importance and fullness of history that exists within the background of this historical site. \n  \nThis project is part of The Umbrella Arts Center’s long standing Art Ramble tradition\, but is extended this year because of the 250 celebration. Viewers will walk a trail that has one monument to Brister Freeman and is otherwise named Thoreau’s trail where quotes accompany you throughout. Between 10 and 12 works will be dispersed and placed along a marked path leading to the Reflection Circle. \n  \nThe participating artists will pull their inspiration from the research and information provided about Walden Woods with the primary source of research being the book Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts by Elise Lemire. \n  \nThe site-specific exhibition will be a combination of sculpture\, installation and live performance inspired by the inhabitants of these woods to evoke their presence and to express the experiences of their lives within the space. Many of the artists will also have work in a show that will be being held concurrently in the Allie Kussin Gallery at The Umbrella Arts Center.

DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Special thanks to Newbury Court for providing the principal funding \nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, Art for All\, a Concord-based community arts organization\, proudly presents the Concord250 Lantern\, a 10-foot-tall commemorative lantern inspired by the historic signal lights of April 19\, 1775. \nSymbolizing the lanterns in the steeple of Boston’s North Church used in a signal arranged by Paul Revere to announce the movement of the British Regulars on the night of April 18th\, 1775 —“one if by land\, two if by sea”—this modern artistic tribute echoes the enduring pursuit of freedom and justice. The only surviving lantern from that night is on view at the Concord Museum\, making this location a fitting site for the illumination of this new commemorative work. The ceremonial lighting will take place on Sunday\, March 23\, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM on the lawn of the Concord Museum. In an Olympic-style journey\, bicyclists will carry an LED torch from Boston to Concord\, symbolically bringing the light of liberty forward into a new era. \nThis family-friendly community event invites attendees to reflect on the ideals of democracy while witnessing a moment of artistic and historical significance. Dressed in a gown of the time\, she plays authentic instruments such as lap dulcimer and an “English guitar” of the type favored by women in the 18th century. Join her for a trip back in time. Suggested donation $20.\n \nDiane is on the Scholarly Advisory Board of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History\, based in New York City. SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Abundant Heresies: The Revolutions of Theodore Parker and Ralph Waldo Emerson – with Richard Smith
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Parker of Lexington and Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord were directly linked to the events of April 19\, 1775. Both men’s grandfathers were involved in the battles that sparked the American Revolution. \nHow did Parker and Emerson view their revolutionary heritage? How did this shape their thinking in the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War? In this lecture\, Public Historian Richard Smith will discuss the literary and spiritual connections between the two men and their two towns. How did Parker and Emerson use their heritage to help change American literature and thought? How did this affect the Anti-slavery Movement of the 1850s? \nRichard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States history and 19th-century American literature for 26 years. He has worked in Concord as a public historian and Living History Interpreter since 1999 and has written or edited 11 books for Applewood Books/Arcadia Publishing. Richard is a regular contributor to Discover Concord Magazine. \n    \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Concord Free Public Library Concert\, Rotunda \nPeter Sykes is one of the most distinguished and versatile keyboard artists performing today. He will be performing a harpsichord concert reflecting music in homes in the American colonial era. \nConcerts are free and open to the public\, but reservations are required. Reservations open at 9 a.m. on the Saturday two weeks before the concert. The library closes at 5 on the day of the concert\, volunteers with oversight from a library staff member prepare for the concert\, then the doors are opened for the audience at 7 p.m. Concerts are about 90 minutes long\, including a brief intermission. \nSave Date for April 5: Stephen Drury is a pianist and conductor on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. His program features Bach\, Beethoven\, and Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata. \n  \n\n  \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Reserve your space using the QR code below or link here.  \nReservations requested but not required. \n \n“A Fight for Freedom: Honoring Patriots of Color” is a two-hour live  event dedicated to uncovering and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Indigenous patriots  both during the American Revolution and the long struggle for continued expansion of  freedom and liberty over the past 250 years. \nThis event will take place at the Umbrella Arts\, 40 Stow Street in Concord. \nIn 1775\, between 20 and 40 colonists of African and Indigenous descent fought alongside their fellow revolutionaries on the Battle Road during the opening conflict of the American Revolution. These individuals\, who had been excluded from formal militia service prior to the war\, became some of the earliest patriots to take up arms in the fight for liberty. By the end of the Revolutionary War\, approximately 5\,500  people of color had served in the Continental Army or militia\, risking their lives for the promise of freedom. \nDespite their significant role in the founding of the United States\, the stories of these patriots and their descendants  have often been erased or overshadowed by historical bias\, and their sacrifices obscured by a narrative written by others. \nBy telling their stories and honoring their service\, we not only shed light on their essential contributions but also expand our understanding of the nation’s founding. Their bravery and resilience remind us that the struggle for freedom has always been fought by people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Today\, efforts at the national and state levels—particularly in Massachusetts—are working to correct this historical oversight and honor the full spectrum of those who fought and continue to fight for liberty and equality for all people. \nProgram Highlights: \n\nHistorical Narratives: Historical interpreters guide participants through the stories of people  who fought for independence. SUMMARY:Telling a Better Story – Expand What You Know About Concord’s History
DESCRIPTION:Are you hosting family and friends for the 250th? Would you like to impress them with what you know about Concord’s history? If you want to update the stories you know and learn new ones\, you will want to attend this talk.\n\nPublic historian Beth van Duzer has updated and expanded some well-known stories using primary sources\, such as John Jack’s\, enslaved to a Concord shoemaker Benjamin Barron\, able to purchase his freedom\, and buried in Concord’s Old Hill Burial Ground. Additionally\, new stories have emerged that enrich Concord’s history\, including the tale of an Indigenous boy who lived in Concord in the late 1700s\, women who were compensated by the Town of Concord whose husbands served as soldiers during the Revolutionary War\, and the expanded story of an enslaved woman who later lived as a free person in Concord. \nBeth van Duzer is an independent historian in Concord\, MA. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State University and a master’s degree in History\, focused on Public History\, from Southern New Hampshire University. Beth is the co-chair and clerk of the Concord250 History & Education Subcommittee and is the owner of Concord Walking Tours\, a history research and tour company.
