SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 1:30pm Tours \nMarch 22\, 2025 – June 30\, 2025 \nBetween twenty and forty colonists who fought along the Battle Road on April 19\, 1775\, were of African descent or Indigenous people. Although excluded from required militia service prior to the war\, these individuals of color were the first of many to take up arms between 1775 and 1783. \nBy the end of the conflict\, an estimated 5\,500 African and Indigenous  men served on the colonial side. Unfortunately\, systemic racism and historical bias have erased or buried many records of Black and Indigenous people who played a prominent role in the founding of the United States. In this 90 minute walking tour we will examine the known history and stories of these Patriots of Color who fought for freedom locally both during the American Revolution and beyond. Minuteman National Park\, Robbins House and Concord Visitors Center staff will lead this tour examining the incredible stories of individuals who risked everything during their struggle for liberty\, equality\, and freedom for all.\n\nTour meets at the North Bridge Lower Lot.  All ages are welcome. Free from March 22-June 30\, 2005.\n\nThis walking tour  is  co-sponsored by Minuteman National Park\, The Robbins House\,  and The Concord Visitors Center as a Concord250 Event and is funded by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.\n\nDonations in support of Black History Month in Concord may be made to The Robbins House here:  https://robbinshouse.org/donate/\n\nLearn More about Patriots of Color HERE\n\nhttps://robbinshouse.org/wp-content/uploads/PatriotsofColor-web.pdf\n\nhttps://www.nps.gov/mima/patriotsofcolor.htm

SUMMARY:Learning How to Read by Moonlight
DESCRIPTION:While his mother struggles to earn money in New York City and his father waits alone in Manila for their daily phone calls\, six-year-old Eddie learns English from his imaginary friend. Between the War on Drugs in the Philippines and the anti-immigrant movement in the United States threatening their humanity\, will this undocumented family be able to pursue their dreams and address unspoken truths? A musical and multilingual journey of childlike wonder\, Gaven D. Trinidad’s “Learning How to Read by Moonlight” is equal parts playful\, poignant\, and hella Pinoy. \nTo spotlight Boston’s own community leaders and activism\, a new narrator (a fellow artist\, community organizer\, or elected official) joins the storytelling every night. “Learning How to Read by Moonlight” is spoken in English and Tagalog with subtitles. \nAll tickets are Pay-What-You-Want!\nMay 16 – 24\, 2025 at Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theatre (Boston\, MA)\nMay 29 – June 1\, 2025 at Pao Arts Center (Boston\, MA)\nJune 5-June 8\, 2025 at The Umbrella Arts Center (Concord\, MA) \nFind information and tickets at: https://companyone.org/learning-how-to-read-by-moonlight/

SUMMARY:Concord Art: 250 Paintings for Concord’s 250th!
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the town of Concord’s 250th anniversary\, we invite you to join us for an art-making extravaganza! This June\, artists can register and pick up a free wood panel (8 x 8 inches) from Concord Art to create an image of Concord\, whatever that may mean to you. Perhaps there is a certain road or field or woods or something else that you’ve always been drawn to or inspired by. All media is welcome; the only constraint is that you use your wood panel as your surface! You can enjoy camaraderie and community in the outdoors and create alongside your fellow artists by working either outside Concord Art (along the American Mile) or at one of our designated locations during the week of June 2nd through June 6th (locations to be announced). Artists are welcome to work together each day at these locations from 10am to 4pm. Don’t forget your easel\, supplies\, water\, and snacks! For planning purposes\, please register in advance. Space is limited at each location. Our goal is to collect 250 paintings for Concord’s 250th! At the end of the week\, we will create a digital gallery exhibition\, so please share your finished artwork with us by completing this form (the form is not available yet) by Monday June 16th. \nImage attached: Jean Smith\, The Old Manse

SUMMARY:Concord250 Event: Concord Orchestra performance “American Heritage”
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 @ 8:00PM and March 30 @ 2:30PM \nThe Concord Orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, is thrilled to perform “American Heritage” concerts as part of the Concord250 celebration.  Performances are on Saturday\, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday\, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden.  We are excited to present a world premiere of A Beacon of Hope by Jeff Beal\, commissioned by the orchestra for the celebration!  Jeff Beal\, the composer of the new work\, is an Emmy-winning composer of soundtracks for films and television. \nOther American compositions on the program are Florence Price’s brilliant Symphony No. 3\, Leonard Bernstein’s festive Candide Overture\, and The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa. \nWe look forward to performing with Richard Sebring\, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 and his own short work composed for the occasion\, The White Cockade. Richard Sebring remarks\, “It’s always a great pleasure to make music with my friends in the Concord Orchestra\, especially in 51 Walden\, the site of many artistic experiences in my youth. And I look forward to collaborating with Zeke Fetrow\, who will bring unbridled energy to these performances.” \nFlorence Price\, a 1906 graduate of New England Conservatory\, was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Her expressive Symphony No. 3 \, written in 1938 and 1939\, includes melodies inspired by spirituals and a dance called a juba that was brought to the southern United States by African slaves.  Its premiere was in 1940\, but it was neglected until it was performed again in 2001.  It remained unpublished until 2008\, and it was not until recently that it was re-discovered and played more frequently. \nDr. Sam Woodhead\, trombone soloist of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band\, will lead a workshop on Sousa performance for musicians in the orchestra. Pre-concert discussions by Zeke Fetrow and other musicians involved in the performance are planned for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. SUMMARY:Minute Man National Historical Park Memorial Weekend Event
DESCRIPTION:Minute Men to Minute Men\nNorth Bridge Visitor Center\nSaturday\, May 24\n10am – 4:30pm\nAs we launch into the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, Minute Man National Historical Park is working on programs that not only tell the story of the revolution but how it impacted the development of the United States. \nIn the spring of 1861\, President Abraham Lincoln put out a call for volunteers to suppress the secessionist rebellion brewing in the south. As a result\, thousands of men from local communities like Concord\, Acton\, and Lowell answered the call as “Minute Men.” \nShockingly on April 19\, 1861\, the 6th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Militia (Minute Men) came under attack by a secessionist mob while transferring trains in Baltimore\, Maryland. In a brutal melee the secessionist killed five militiamen and wounded 36 others. Overall\, the battle resulted in the death of twelve Baltimoreans. These casualties are often cited as the first combat casualties of the American Civil War. For many of the Massachusetts soldiers\, the symbology of their first combat experience occurring on the same day their grandfathers started the revelation was poignant. \nSchedule of Events:\n10:00 am~ Artifacts of the Pratt Street Riot and Living History at North Bridge Visitor Center *Ongoing throughout the day.\n10:00 am~ Uniforms and equipment of the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia\n11:00 am~ The Radicalization of Massachusetts 1859-1861\n1:00 pm~ The Pratt Street Riot: Battlefield in a Box\n2:00 pm~ Minute Men of 1775 to Minute Men of 1861 *Musket Firing Demonstration*\n3:00 pm~ From Annapolis to Bull Run: The Massachusetts Volunteer Militia\n4:30 pm~ Event Ends

SUMMARY:Urinetown the Musical May 2-17
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Players presents Urinetown the Musical…a slightly different type of Revolution! \nIt’s a dark time in a dark city\, where a 20-year drought has led to severe water restrictions — including a ban on private toilets. Fee-based public toilets are controlled by the evil Urine Good Company\, which is gleefully gouging huge profits off a very basic human need. In all this wasteland\, can a golden-throated hero arise who has the heart\, the hope\, and the pipes to lead the people to freedom? \nWinner of multiple Tony awards\, Urinetown the Musical is an irreverent satire\, whose sharp wit and non-stop humor present us with the endlessly comic side of unchecked capitalism\, corporate mismanagement\, and social irresponsibility. \nPerformances: May 2\, 3\, 9\, 10\, 16 & 17 at 8:00 pm and May 4 & 11 at 2:00pm \nat The Performing Arts Center\, 51 Walden Street\, Concord\, MA \nFor Tickets and more information: concordplayers.org or call 978-369-2990
